    The BIGGER Picture
Let's talk a bit about the end solution, there are lots of places on the net to get a Mobile DVR however 99.9% of them only offer CIF resolution with MPEG4 or MJPEG resolutions. We use the Next Gen Technology H.264 which will allow you smaller file sizes, 40-60% savings in HDD space, lower latency and fast connection speeds. IF you want 4CIF @ 30 FPS you can have it, but with a cost at this High-Resolution and quality of video you won't find anywhere else on the Net in a small ruggedized platform.

We can offer you CIF resolution model DVRs like our competitors, please see our Firmus Lite series DVRs. Using our H.264 technology, which will give you same resolution but give you 10 x the quality in video. Now you can pay a little more for the Hardware in the beginning or pay a lot more HDD space in the end, with older technologies you will also be looking at higher bandwidth requirements, more failures and more physical space to put it all in.

Now moving right along to the bigger picture, 99 % of the time our Firmus Boxer is used in a mobile application where there are several vehicles, possibly an Ad Hoc network (we can provide), there is usually a central building a warehouse etc... you will need a system that will work seamlessly and connect all systems from the cars to the main building with cameras, to other buildings etc.. with cameras to a complete solution. We have developed a software that will allow you to connect all these units into one (1) easy to use platform,
Click here for more information on our Concert Hybrid DVR/NVR software solution brochure.

If you can give us the scope of your project and think farther down the lines, we can take everything from the Central Control station to DVRs in other buildings where you want surveillance to the DVRs in the Cars with Ad Hoc network and combine everything together into a complete solution and be able to offer you lower costs on the Hardware. Also if there is something that you need specifically in the software we offer development at a cost.

If you choose one of our competitors mobile DVRs, you will not be able to tie it all together meaning the cameras located on the streets, the mobile application, the control room, the IP cameras and networked video encoders etc.. etc.. are not going to be compatible and will leave you fumbling with equipment, software, your budget and time.

Give us a call, let us simplify it and offer you a complete, seamless, upgradeable and expandable Solution based on your requirements, wants, and budget!

      Quick Q & A

    • Q: What are the differences between CIF, 2CIF, 4CIF, QCIF, DCIF & D1 resolution?

    • A: Resolution and bit rate:

    • Resolution:

      • CIF – 352 x 240 pixels
      • 2CIF – 704 x 240 pixels
      • 4CIF – 704 x 480 pixels – has the best resolution
      • QCIF -1076 x 120 pixels – Is almost never used
      • DCIF – 528 x 320 pixels
        • 2CIF and DCIF have the same # of pixels but the DCIF has a better aspect ratio (3x4)
      • D1 - 720 x 480 pixels - Is basically the same as 4CIF, different manufacturers apply different pixel x pixel but it is usually 16 pixels wider than 4CIF which is un-noticeable to the naked eye.

    • Bit Rate:

    • Recommended Bit rates (higher motion requires higher bit rates)

      • CIF: 4fps: 160–320 kbps ~ 8fps: 224–448 kbps ~ 16fps: 320–640 kbps ~ 20fps: 384–768 kbps ~ 30fps: 448–896 kbps

      • DCIF: 4fps: 192-384 kbps ~ 8fps: 256-512 kbps ~ 16fps: 384-768 kbps ~ 20fps: 448–896 kbps ~ 30fps: 512-1024 kbps

      • 4CIF: 4fps: 320–640 kbps ~ 8fps: 512-1024 kbps ~ 16fps: 640-1280 kbps ~ 20fps: 896-1792 kbps ~ 30 fps: 1024-2048 kbps

The higher the resolution the larger the file size, the higher the resolution the clearer the image, just like a digital camera. DCIF (528 x 320), will give the best video quality in a Embedded DVR with 16 channels.

Compression is a separate setting and in our hardware is independent of the resolution and frame rate setting. The three settings must be set with each of the other two settings in mind. Too much compression will result in a poor image, too low a frame rate setting will result in lots of missed action and too low a resolution will not deliver the image quality you desire.

Bear in mind that if there is a PTZ or high motion, higher bit rates (lower compression) should be set.

      Further on the HDD space

HDD space required is directly fixed to the bit rate and only the bit rate. Bit rate should be determined by the fps, resolution and image quality desired. We can set any bit rate 32kbps-2048kbps with any fps or resolution. The bit rate chosen with a given fps and resolution will dictate the image quality. So you see bit rate is what controls the HDD space needed, but we need to select a bit rate that will give the image quality desired at the programmed fps and resolution.

For example you can set 4CIF, 30fps, 32kbps – useless video
      Or
      4CIF, 30fps 2048fps – best video

The bit rate selection is what affects the image quality and the HDD space, the fps and resolution do not come into play on the actual calculation, but they are used to determine the bit rate required.

So not factoring fps, resolution or image quality the h.264 system HDD space per hour per channel ranges from 14.4MB to 921MB. Obviously the higher the bit rate the better the image quality. The higher the resolution and fps the higher the bit rate needs to be to get the desired image quality.

    • A pointer about fps, a punch can be missed with less then 7fps, a theft can be missed with less then 10 fps.

    • Q: What are the differences between REV0 and REVA and the Cellular transmission?

    • A: (EV-DO) Evolution-Data Optimized is a wireless radio broadband data standard adopted by many CDMA mobile phone service providers in United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. • Q: Will The FIRMUS Boxer-S operate at extremely low Temperatures?
    • A: Yes, The FIRMUS Boxer-S does not have any internal fans etc... and the systems operating system is on a flash card, however the HDDs will not start to spin until the temperature reaches 0 deg, it's just the nature of the beast, the power draw when using a external HDD is 70W on start up, once started the unit produces enough heat and a continuous 30W of power will be required to run the unit which has a start time in less than a minute.

    • Q: Does the FIRMUS Boxer-S have an IP output?
    • A: Yes, it has an 10/100 Ethernet (IP) output which can be connected directly to a laptop to download etc.. or connected through a fire walled environment to 16 of our H.264 IP components.

    • Q: How is remote connection achieved?
    • A: Remote connection can be achieved by either a Cellular card which plugs into the unit, through a Wireless PCI card or a external cellular modem.

    • Q: I notice ther are 2 slots on the front of teh FIRMUS Boxer-S unit what are they for?
    • A: The first slot going left to right is a Compact Flash card slot and the next is a PCMCIA slot.

    • Q: How can I utilize the Compact Flash slot on the FIRMUS Boxer-S?
    • A: The Compact Flash Card is used in instances where a Solid State super ruggedized application is required such as fighter planes or anything that is encountering a lot of vibration, we can embedded the Windows XP operating system onto the Compact Flash Card and remove the internal HDD additionally the FIRMUS Boxer-S has 4 USB 2.0 ports which will allow you to connect a Flash Drive (unlimited size) to each of the 4 USB ports to make it a complete Solid State High-End Ruggedized Professional Quality recording system!

    • Q: Can I configure the FIRMUS Boxer-S to record to more than 1 HDD at a time?
    • A: No, but you can configure which HDD / Compact Flash to start recording to by way of the Concert Hybrid DVR/NVR software and as you add HDDs / compact flash sticks like a PC it recognizes these as new drives and will record to the next one on the list when the HDD it s currently recording to is full.

    • Q: Is there a loop-out so I can display the 4-32 cameras on one screen?
    • A: No, there is no need the FIRMUS Boxer-S is a PC based unit which can use a keyboard - mouse, speakers and Monitor. It has a VGA output which you connect your monitor to you will then use the GUI interface and view all the 4-32 cameras on one screen.

    • Q: How much can video can I record with my settings @ 4CIF resolution 2 Mbps @ 30 fps?
    • A: Well if you are using our 4ch model 4CIF @ 2 Mbps @ 30 FPS will use 921 MB/HR/camera x 4 = 3.68 GB/HR for all 4 cameras, so if you had 4 x 32GB USB USB Flash Drives installed you would get 34.5 hrs of Smokin video!. On the other end of things if you use the same settings @ CIF resolution it would use 46 MB/HR/camera x 4 cameras = 1.84 GB/HR for all 4 cameras giving you 69.5 hrs of Smokin video! All Solid State!

    • Q: What is the largest internal HDD you can get in teh Firmus Boxer-S h.264 Ruggedized Mobile DVR?
    • A: A 120GB HDD is the largest we can use at this time, later in 2008 larger drives will be available. So anything larger than a 120GB HDD will be an external connection through the USB ports.
