What is the function of a Balun?

The function of a balun (acronym for BALanced/UNbalanced) is to change from one transmission medium with a defined impedance (ie. 75 ohms coaxial) to another transmission medium with a different impedance (ie. 120 ohms twisted pair).

Why Use Baluns?

Baluns extend transmission distances. Using passive baluns, you can send audio and video signals up to 2,500 feet, and VGA signals up to 350 feet.
Baluns utilize existing wiring. Many buildings already contain structured UTP cabling systems.
If so, the hard work is already done--simply connect a balun at each end of the cable run to transmit your signal.
Baluns reduce installation cost and increase installation efficiency. Traditionally, a single cable could not transmit both audio and video. Using baluns, both audio and video can be transmitted via one inexpensive run of Cat 5.
Baluns eliminate background hum and rolling interference. Because they contain isolation transformers and utilize twisted cabling, baluns eliminate the ground loops that cause background hum and rolling interference.
Baluns lower installation cost. In many installations, the cost of baluns plus Cat 5 cable is less than traditional wire, such as coaxial and twisted pair audio.
